Grains in the Wet Tropics
Barron Catchment Care has received funding through the federal government and the Reef Alliance to assist ten mixed cropping farmers address soil and water runoff for their farms. Each farmer will work with a consultant to draw up a soil conservation plan for their property. The balance of the funds will then be used to commence installing on-farm structures such as soil conservation banks and grassed waterways.
The first stage in the project is for the farmers to benchmark their current farming operation in terms of sediment management, nitrogen fertiliser use, herbicide application methods and use of tillage.
This stage is nearly complete. The next stage involves Jeff Benjamin of North Australia Water Solutions drawing up farm sediment management plans.
It is anticiapted that on-ground works will commence in 2018, once the wet season is over and also when harvesting has finished.
