BARRON RIVER CATCHMENT CARE
Griffin Road and Tate Road Detention Basins (2008)
Barron Catchment Care is partnering with the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and community groups to slow the flow of stormwater and restore natural habitat throughout urban landscapes near Tolga and Atherton.
Three large, tiered, detention ponds were built in Tolga to manage seasonal flood waters threatening the highway and homes below. Designed to slow the flow, drop the sediment load and replenish groundwater, the three ponds were completed and vegetated in 2008. In 2011 the TRC cleared 10,000 tonnes of red mud from the three basins which would have made it to the Barron River without this intervention.
